Chagrin & Bear It: Tom Cruise Gets Thropplenoggined

December 12, 2008

In a new weekly column, Dr. X.Y. Thropplenoggin, “anthropologist to the stars”, helps celebrities solve their dilemmas

tc3

Dear Tom

You’ve come to the right man.  As a self-styled “anthropologist to the stars”, this is the sort of question I get asked all the time:  Which fad religion should I join this month?  Will I become the laughing stock of Hollywood if I start wearing a Kabbalah bracelet?  Is it safe to come in from the Zen garden yet?  Why can’t I just make up my own religion?  And, most delicate of all, is Scientology a c-word, and, if so, should I avoid it like rats infested with Russell Brand?

I’m afraid you’re going to have to be a big brave boy for Dr. Thropplenoggin, Tom.  Take a deep breath.  Stop that banal smirking for just a moment.  Okay.  Here goes.  As it happens, Mr. Spielberg is right.  Scientology is a c-word, it is a story, and, yes, it is E.T. writ large.  Come on, Tom, didn’t you ever wonder where L. Ron got his name from?  It’s Old Mother Hubbard, she of the bare cupboards!  Or consider the poor choice of “spiritual auditing” with all those juicy tax breaks?  Or ponder why thetan was an anagram of the ant?

Okay, Tom, believe it or not, you’re already well on the road to recovery.  You will, I’m sure, have moments of doubt, so why not recite this little ditty at such times, to keep you on the right path:

Old Mother Hubbard
Went to the cupboard
To fetch old Rover a bone.

When she bent over
Old Rover took over
And gave her a bone of his own.

Consider yourself cured – and Thropplenoggined.

Dr. Thropplenoggin
